why do some items have the purple writing and not others?

Some items with the purple writing have better stats than others. for instance a short sword, it could have attack of 2-4, (when a standard short sword has 2-3), or a higher critical hit %. Not just on short swords, it could be on any items.

Hey Forgotten.
Actually, it IS possible! It's really rare, though. I caught a screenie of one because I was wondering myself, until this dropped. Unfortunately it's just a newbie item but here's to showing you that it is very possible!
Oh and by the way... I get what purple items are, but what are glowing items? I can't seem to tell the difference. I was looking around but didn't see a post about it.

i was wondering too... and as for glowing items, they raise your invisible luck stat that basically determines drop rate of items
|

I don't know about the luck thing. i was using a "glowing" sword and i wasn't getting anything. i was grinding for an hour and i got no red potions. only money every 5 guys, and sometimes a magic dust. then I changed my sword to a regular non-glowing one, and i was getting more items. whats up with that?

Actually, when I had that glowing purple short sword, I noticed that my crit rate went up to 9, and when I switched over to a regular long sword, it went to 0, haha.
Does a short sword have a higher crit rate? Or does that "invisible luck" stat thing also affect crit rate?

for glowing weapons when equipped it has better crit chance but the luck is only in effect when its in your inventory
