mine did this too. If what Forgotten says doesn't work hold down the power and the home button for about 10 seconds then release the home and continue holding down the power. The apple logo should appear. It worked for me. Did the battery die?

yes, but you didn't say let go of the home button. I tried just holding them both down and it had no effect. Once I let go of the home button, a few seconds later the apple logo appeared. Sorry if it sounds like I'm being mean or anything.

There are a few options for you to do.

You can hold down the home AND power button together for about 30 seconds. Your iPod should turn off and then reboot with the apple logo. This is called a hard reboot.

Another thing you can do is hold the power AND home button together until your iPod turns off, wait about 1 second, then let go of the power button and keep holding the home button. Your iPod should turn back on but look a little strange. This enters your iPod into DFU mode. Once you see it turn on, you should be able to hard reboot it (if your iPod turns off and won't turn back on if you've tried the hard reboot method) and it should start up.

I have an iPhone, and sometimes it freezes and instead of booting up, it just vibrates twice at the apple logo. If hard rebooting doesn't fix it, I usually put my phone into DFU mode and then hard reboot it and everything works fine.

Oh by the way, this only works with iPod touches and iPhones... if you have a regular iPod... hold down the enter button and the play button (the center button and the button at the bottom of the big circle thing. (Where I marked on this iPod with two ugly blue crosses obviously drawn in Microsoft Paint)

Hold them down for a little and your iPod should display the Apple logo. After about a minute or two, your iPod should be up and running again.

when you put it in DFU mode, don't you have to restore it in itunes?

That's good, I wouldn't try the DFU mode one unless it is bricked or corrupted. You will lose everything, unless you make a backup. But iTunes is a pain... What time is where you are? The website says like 2:00am right now.
